Kare 11 News - 9/7/10

Check out this story that aired on 9/7/10 on Kare 11

DULUTH, Minn. -- If the purchase was meant to scream affluence, the rusty '89 Toyota Camry was a poor choice.

"It hadn't been run for six or seven years," explained Dan Dresser about his must-have vehicle. "It was basically a junked car."

Clearly, Dresser wasn't shopping for prestige or style when he rescued the light blue Toyota from the weeds. He and his buddy Jason Wussow had something else cooking - namely, curry chicken on the manifold.

You've heard of efficiency kitchens. Dresser's and Wussow's gets 33 miles per gallon. "It is a kitchen," says Wussow about the Toyota as he unpacks the ingredients for dinner and a two-hour road trip.

Dresser first became aware of the shelf-shaped manifold in the Camry while driving a Toyota Celica several years earlier with the same four cylinder engine. It proved to the perfect cooking surface for whatever meal he and Wussow can fit in a bread pan. The engine, "was designed for this," Dresser insists. "They have to have designed it to do this."

For two-and-a-half years now, Dresser and Wussow have been traveling the countryside in the equivalent of a 2700 pound gas grill.

Not that there haven't been challenges. How does one, after all, steam the rice when the chicken is already on the manifold? Dresser solved that one by running a radiator hose through the Camry's glove compartment. "It's our slow cooker, rice steamer, slash warming oven, in the glove box," states Wussow.

If it seems like a lot of trouble when there are perfectly fine Burger Kings along the way, you're missing the point. "This is a trip. This is an adventure. I don't know. Just have so much more fun along the way," reflects Wussow.

With chicken curry as their air vent incense, Dresser and Wussow head down the road with their dinner bubbling on the engine. The ingredients, you'll find in any grocery store; the oven, in select junkyards.

WISCONSIN FILM FEST AWARD

Episode I won!

Out of 162 films shown at the Wisconsin Film Fest in Madison this past weekend, Cooking on the Car won a "Golden Badger" award. Only eight GBs were awarded. Eight out of 162. As Jason would say in typical Minnesotan, "Not bad. Not bad, at all."

Cool.
And many, many thanks to Meg, Allen, and all the many many folks who made the WFF an awesome experience.

HOLD ON TO YOUR HATS (AND VIDEO)

Lots of folks have been asking, "Where's the video?"

Like Clara Peller and her "Where's the beef?" commercial, we're holding back on posting video from the West Coast Turnaround Tour.

Why? Because wise people in the TV industry have advised us to hold off on posting content to the web and to focus on creating a kick-ass "sizzle reel" to show to producers.

Well, we've got an awesome sizzle real done and ready to show to four different legit producers/production companies from L.A. to New York and points between who have asked to see our content/material. On March 23rd we're meeting with a well-respected, well-connected producer/entertainment lawyer and we have 20 minutes of his time to pitch COTC.

So, we're asking, "Please be patient with us." We're not sharing video at this time for what we believe are excellent reasons. The most excellent of which is that we think there is a COTC TV series of some kind in our future.

Are we having fun yet?

Absolutely.

AHHH, SWEET SLEEP

Tucumcari, N.M. provides respite for adventurers in the seventh dimension. (Obscure movie reference.)

COUNTER SPACE IN ELLEN

There's not a lot of counter space in Ellen.

POTLUCK CRASHERS

Jason and Dan crashed a potluck supper at the Silver Dollar Saloon and brought in their venison porketta donated by Beaner's food rep Steve. The seasoning given by Jimmy Johnson and the wild rice and green onions combined with the shaved venison that was slow cooked for four hours in the "warming oven" was wildly popular as every morsel was devoured.

CHEESECAKE FOR CHRIS KELLY IN SEATTLE

Here's the fixings for the cheesecake crust that the boys are making for Chris Kelly in Seattle.

SCRAMBLED EGGS AND TOAST

Jason holds up the fixings for breakfast in Montana. Bacon, leeks, portabella mushrooms for frying and then mix it in with scrambled eggs and hot toast from the warming oven. YUM! Next stop Missoula morning munching.

The EYES Have It

Jason got an eye full yesterday. Full of wood chips that is. Ellen's defrost vent blew a flurry of chips out and one landed in Jay's eye. $250 bucks later the dynamic duo is now on their way to Butte.

Dan's Family Gets Car-Cooked Tacos

Jason and Dan made it to the Dresser Dad's fish house but alas, no fish! So the boys made tacos with lime cilantro beans for Gerry and Jerry (Dan's parents), brother Tom and sister-in-law Heidi, and their son Caleb. The warming oven worked GREAT! Oh, BTW, Dan's dad caught a fish (hope it was walleye) earlier for the boys to take along for manifold cooking later. On to Fargo!

WARMING OVEN SUCCESS

The warming oven is up and running. Couple of small changes may be needed, but it keeps food toasty and warm. Yay!

WHERE TO?

Well, it has been an interesting few days for COTC. There's good news and bad news. First the bad. Our partnership with 4 track fell through. The good news? We're still leaving on a COTC adventure on January 19th.

Here are the details of our new adventure: 1.) We don't know where we're going. 2.) We aren't exactly sure how we're going to pay for the trip. 3.) Ellen isn't exactly ready for the road, but she's in good enough shape (Big THANKS to Kari Toyota here) to get us rolling on down the highway. 4.) We don't have all the audio and video gear we'd like. 5.) BUT! We are GOING and we're going to make our OUR OWN pilot to pitch.

If you have any audio/video gear you'd like to lend us for the trip, we'd be needing some help. If you have any inclination to donate some gas money, we'd be liking that. If you have any suggested destination and or recipes or adventures that would lend us direction, feel free to give us a shout-out.

"When one door closes, a window opens" the saying goes, so too with COTC.

Wish us luck!
